Weekly Tip #11 – Change Your Cleaning Products

Did you know that your cleaning habits can have a negative impact on the environment and contribute to climate change?

Every year, home cleaning generates more than 29 billion pieces of plastic each year.

We all know that plastic takes hundreds of years to break down and often ends up in the ocean.

In fact, by 2050 it is predicted there will be more plastic in the sea than fish – a scary thought.

But home cleaning does not just impact the environment through plastic waste.

There are a number of other ways in which your cleaning habits can negatively impact our planet.

Many cleaning products contain toxic chemicals that are harmful both to humans and plants and animals.

These chemicals can contain ‘volatile organic compounds’ and when you use them, they end up in the air and down the drain.

Many of these compounds are not fully removed by waste-water treatment facilities and over time they build up in nature.

These compounds also get into the air we breathe and are especially harmful to asthmatics, young children and older people.

Some cleaning products also contain the dreaded micro-beads which end up in the food chain and can do long term damage to fish, animals and people!

If that isn’t bad enough, cleaning products are often tested on animals!

Change your cleaning products

By changing your cleaning habits and using more sustainable products, you can play your part in reducing all these issues.

So, what should you look for?

Well, look for biodegradable or recyclable packaging.

Look for products that are cruelty-free, don’t contain harmful chemicals such as ‘phosphates’ and don’t contain artificial colours or scents.

A fantastic choice for sustainable home cleaning is OceanSaver!

We love their plant-based, pet-friendly concentrated cleaning solution which is made by dropping a cleaning pod into an existing or new reusable spray bottle (you can buy a fully recyclable bottle for life from them).

This simple design means you cut down on single-use plastic and reduce the CO2 emissions from transportation as they don’t have to transport the water!

Beyond their inventive cleaning products, OceanSaver uses recyclable and biodegradable ‘cruelty’ free materials across all their lines.

OceanSaver cleaning products even received rave reviews from Good Housekeeping!
