Play it Green Co-Founder to Mentor SportsPro Sustainability Hackathon

SportsPro Media, the world’s leading international media company for the sports industry in print, digital and events, is holding a Sustainability Hackathon this April, following the success of the Hackathon last year.

Play it Green Co-Founder, Richard Dickson, is amongst the 27 founders and industry leaders invited to be a mentor for the students taking part in the three-day event. Other mentors include Chris Gratton, COO of Ticketmaster Sport and Anne-Cecil Turner, Head of Sustainability for The Ocean Race.

The sports industry has, in recent years, been looking at how we can solve the social and ecological issues that face us while prioritising the ‘triple bottom line’; profit, people, and the planet. The Sustainability Hackathon will be a part of this, bringing together top students across the world to compete against each other and create innovative solutions for the sports industry, whilst also being mentored by the top thought leaders within the industry.

Powered by Wonderful Copenhagen, the Hackathon will see students set challenges to enable major events to fulfil the challenge of ensuring business practice is as sustainable as it can be.

Commercial Director of SportsPro Media, Paul Guest, said, “Following the success of our inaugural SportsPro Sustainability Hackathon in 2021, we are once again focussing on sustainable innovation and the triple bottom line – priorities for the sports industry that are often tick-box exercises or communication-only considerations.

“Alongside our co-hosts, Wonderful Copenhagen, top students from around the world will be developing solutions for the ecological & social challenges facing the sports industry. I am grateful to Richard for joining leading sustainability and sports industry innovators supporting the students throughout the Hackathon and looking forward to this year’s concepts.”

Richard Dickson, Play it Green Co-Founder who will mentor in the event, said, “It’s exciting to be able to mentor some of the sports sustainability leaders of the future and hopefully pass on some experience and knowledge to the amazing students taking part. The fact that Sports Pro Media is taking sustainability so seriously shows there is hope yet for the industry to embed going green into its everyday operations.”
