Earth Month: What Does ‘Invest in Our Planet’ Really Mean?

It’s Earth Month! And for the next four weeks, we will be taking stock of where we are in the fight against climate change, what we have accomplished and what we still need to do and to remind ourselves exactly what we are fighting for.

In this first Earth Month article, we will take a look into this year’s theme, Invest in Our Planet, and what that really means to us as a species.

Arguably, this may be the most important Earth Month to date. It follows COP26, the largest climate change conference ever held, and the ground-breaking new IPCC reports catching us up on all the latest science.

Because of this, EarthDay.Org, the organisers of the event, will aim to engage more than 1 billion people, governments, institutions, and businesses. This may seem like a lot, but it is only through collective action that our goals can be achieved. As they say:

Everyone accounted for, and everyone accountable.

Investing in our planet means stopping reliance on old out-of-date fossil fuel technologies and redirecting our attention to creating a 21st Century economy that repairs our planet, protects the species living on it, and provides opportunities for all.

It means reframing the conversation, accelerating action, and bringing us together to understand that this is possible and within our reach, if we work together.

This means that all of society must play a part.

Governments can open new doors by incentivizing their citizens, businesses, and institutions to create and innovate. They can create a fair global economic system to implement these innovations and changes without giving up their role to advance and protect the public’s interests in this transition.

Individual citizens – as voters, watchdogs, and consumers – are responsible for holding business, governments, and others accountable and supporting their efforts when they get it right.

However, like other economic revolutions, inventors, innovators, businesses, and investors are the most likely to drive significant change.

At Play it Green, we are dedicated to investing in a better future for the planet, ourselves, and our children. We believe strongly in the power of both individual and collective action and will continue to help people, businesses, and the sports sector to embrace sustainable change.

Through our tree planting efforts and helping our members reduce their footprint, we are investing in our planet every day. Because changing the way we live today means we will be able to prosper tomorrow.

“In 2022, we all must enter into one partnership for the planet. People, governments, and even most businesses fear change but the status quo – the way we live today – is changing before our eyes. In building our future, individuals, businesses, governments each have a unique role – we need to act individually and together,” said Kathleen Rogers, President, EarthDay.Org.

“Unlike other historic economic revolutions, this time there are two additional imperatives: the first is to save ourselves from the climate crisis, and the second is to build new green economies in every country so that everyone can share in the benefits from this green revolution. This will only be done if we invest in our planet’s future together.”
